The natural vacuum cleaners in the pond

Good to know:

If you put snails, mussels, and moss balls in the pond, they will need a few days to suck up water. After that, they sink to the bottom on their own.

This can take 1-3 days.

Freshwater mussel water conditioner

Bottom cleaner no.1 - Freshwater mussel

Did you know:

  • A freshwater mussel can filter about 10 liters of water per hour? This helps remove pollutants and floating algae.
  • They clean the soil by consuming bottom silt, dead algae and undigested fish food ?
  • Chubs lay their eggs in clams?
  • They can live as long as 80 years?
  • They are most effective when you have 5 to 10 per 1,000 liters of water in the pond?
wall cleaner pond slugs water cleaners

Soil and wall cleaner no.2 - Pond snails

Did you know:

  • freshwater snails feed on litter, dead leaves, filamentous algae and floating algae?
  • Shun them living aquatic plants ?
  • They keep the bottom and walls of ponds clean?
  • They prefer to be in ponds from 20 centimeters to about 1 meter deep?
  • They contribute to a healthy ecosystem; snail poop feeds pond plants.
  • They survive the winter if the pond is at least 40 centimeters deep?
  • They function optimally with at least 20 per 1,000 liters of water?
moss ball water conditioner

Soil Cleaner No.3 - marimo moss ball

Did you know:

  • The scientific name for moss balls 'Chladophora Aegagropila' is?
  • They originally come from Japan and are called Mari (bouncy ball) Mo (moss) there? marimo moss ball symbolize happiness and love.
  • They can withstand extremely hot and cold water?
  • They have a purifying effect, especially when combined with our Pond bacteria Bacta Clear, and help remove algae? These bacteria live in the fine hairs of the moss.
  • They function optimally with at least 10 per 1,000 liters of water?
  • They can purify effectively in larger swimming ponds, at larger numbers? (For example, 50 pieces per 1,000 gallons of water)

Frequently asked questions about natural water purifiers

Pond Advice

We always ship our clams and snails without water. freshwater mussels and snails can survive several days on dry land. They always spit out water after packing and then go into dormancy. At our nursery, the pond animals are always in cold water so they are dormant.

When you put mussels and snails in the pond, they are often still at rest. Sometimes this can leave them floating. Fortunately, this is nothing to worry about! Within 3 days these will sink to the bottom by themselves as they absorb water again.

However, always keep in mind the following points to ensure that pond animals feel at home:

  • Enough plants: Having enough plants in the pond will ensure a good biological balance in the pond which is necessary for the mussels and snails to survive. Mainly oxygen plants, water lilies and marsh plants are recommended. This is because oxygen plants provide enough oxygen for the creatures. The water lily keeps the sun out of the pond so the water does not get too warm. Marsh plants are great for snails to hide and the dead leaves are a food source for the animals.
  • Sufficient substrate on the bottom: Provide a layer of about 10cm of substrate. This is not only housing the necessary Pond bacteria but this is also where the mussels will burrow in.
  • The right depth: We always use a depth for mussels of minimum -40cm and maximum depth of -150cm with a preference for -100cm. This is because not many algae grow at -100cm and the mussels love to eat the algae.

Frequently asked questions about the Algae Eater Natural Pond Vacuum Package

Pond Advice

The package contains a carefully selected mix of natural water purifiers: pond snails, mussels, moss balls, and a dose of Bacta Clear, a special blend of beneficial Pond bacteria that help improve water quality and reduce algae.

The snails and mussels act as natural filters that consume algae and small floating debris. The moss balls absorb excess nutrients that would otherwise feed algae. Bacta Clear adds beneficial bacteria that break down organic waste, depriving the algae of their food source.

Yes, the package is designed to be effective in a wide range of pond types and sizes. However, it is important to adjust the amount of each component to the size of your pond for optimal results.

Most users notice an improvement in water clarity and a decrease in algae within two to three weeks. For best results, it is important to apply the package regularly and ensure that the pond remains well maintained.

No complicated maintenance required! Make sure your pond is adequately circulated and avoid overfeeding fish, as excess food can contribute to nutrient surpluses that feed algae. It is also advisable to assess the population of snails and mussels annually and supplement as needed for continued effectiveness.

Pond Cleaning Package

Pond Cleaning Package

Combats bottom silt and cleans your pond bottom naturally

Bottom sludge is a problem in many ponds. It results from accumulation of leaves, plant debris and animal waste on the bottom. Too much silt can degrade water quality and increase algae. Fortunately, you can tackle this naturally, without chemicals. With our pond cleaning package that includes pond plants with a strong filtering function they absorb nutrients, helping to reduce silt. The roots of pond plants provide a home for beneficial bacteria that break down the silt. Oxygen plants are very important here because they keep the water clear and a layer of porous substrate at the bottom allows plants and bacteria to grow and keep the pond balanced. We supply hardy oxygen plants from our own nursery, with 100% growth and flowering guarantee.

Frequently asked questions about pond cleaning kits

Pond Advice

Oxygen plants play an indirect but essential role in cleaning up bottom silt in ponds. Although they do not literally "clean up" the silt as a cleaner would, they contribute to a healthier pond by breaking down waste products and increasing oxygen levels in the pond, this reduces the formation of new silt and breaks down existing silt.

Snails and mussels are natural water purifiers that play an important role in controlling bottom mud in ponds. Snails feed on fallen leaves, dead plant debris, and algae, which are the primary components of bottom sludge. By consuming these materials, they help reduce the buildup of organic waste on the pond bottom. Mussels filter the water by removing suspended particles of organic matter, including fine silt and algae, from the water. This process reduces water turbidity and the amount of organic material that eventually ends up as silt on the bottom.

No, the pond package consists of oxygen plants and natural water purifiers; snails and mussels. These plants and aquatic animals complement each other perfectly in terms of function, keeping the pond in balance naturally and preventing bottom silt in the future.

Yes, snails and clams are reproducing. One of the concerns people often have when introducing these water purifiers to their pond is that they will reproduce too quickly and cause an overpopulation. Fortunately, this is not the case because the population of both snails and clams is largely regulated by the available food supply. These animals feed on algae and other organic materials. If these food sources are limited, their population growth will naturally stabilize.

Yes, the pond cleaning package does indeed help keep bottom silt away. This is achieved through the combined use of oxygen plants, snails and mussels. The oxygen plants play a dual role: not only do they help clean up bottom silt by consuming nutrients that would otherwise feed algae and silt, but they also add essential oxygen to the water. This oxygen is crucial for supporting the life of microorganisms that actively help break down organic material at the bottom of the pond.
