We always ship our freshwater mussels without water. Mussels can survive for several days on dry land. After packing, they spit out water and go into dormancy. In our nursery, the mussels are kept in cold water so they are already dormant.

My mussels float after receiving them

When you place mussels in the pond, they may still be in their dormant state. Sometimes this causes them to float. This is no cause for concern! Within three days, they will naturally sink to the bottom as soon as they absorb water again.

How do you make mussels feel at home in your pond?

Keep in mind the following points:

Enough plants: Provide plenty of oxygen plants, water lilies and marsh plants. Oxygen plants provide needed oxygen, while water lilies keeps the pond from getting too warm.
Sufficient substrate on the bottom: A layer of about 10 cm of substrate is ideal, allowing the mussels to dig in and pond bacteria develop properly.
Proper depth: Place the mussels at a depth of at least 40 cm and up to 150 cm, with a preference for 100 cm. Less algae grows at this depth, which is ideal for the mussels to eat from.
