Pond substrate

What exactly is pond substrate?

Pond substrate is the foundation of your pond, essential for maintaining a biological balance. It consists of coarse, porous grains, such as stone or lava rocks, which provide the foundation for pond bacteria and plant roots. This porous rock is indispensable for a balanced and healthy pond.

Pond substrate

Is pond substrate necessary on the bottom?

Yes, we think so. In fact, a layer of pond substrate in the pond offers a warm welcome to the right pond bacteria, which attach themselves to the stone grains or lava rocks. These bacteria have a water purifying effect, keeping the water clear naturally. A filter or pump is therefore not necessary, which saves costs. Immediately after construction, you can add these good bacteria. In addition, a layer of pond substrate at the bottom gives plant roots of pond plants the opportunity to firmly establish themselves without rotting. So if you are in doubt about whether to use pond substrate or not; for a natural filter it is indispensable.

How long does pond substrate last?

A nice thing about pond substrate is that it is low maintenance. As long as you place enough aquatic plants in the pond, the substrate will do its job. If desired, you can add lava or stone granules over time. Only when a silt layer forms from organic debris can the substrate's performance diminish. This can happen if your pond is out of balance.

Why pond substrate is a better ground cover than others

Pond substrate has a porous structure that is beneficial for maintaining good water quality. It provides a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow, which helps break down organic waste and remove pollutants such as ammonia and nitrites from the water. This contributes to a healthy pond ecosystem. Pond sand is less ideal because beneficial bacteria cannot settle in it and aquatic plants cannot take root as well, which will cause the pond to become unbalanced more quickly.

This can happen if your pond is out of balance, so make sure the pond is set up and planted correctly.

Pond substrate, why important?

The importance of pond substrate for healthy pond plants

Pond substrate is essential for healthy pond plants because it provides the attachment site for their roots in the pond. Pond plants need a solid substrate to anchor their roots in and to absorb the nutrients and minerals from the water they need to grow. Substrate provides this solid substrate and also keeps the roots of pond plants from rotting in the water. By anchoring their roots in the substrate, pond plants can develop properly and experience healthy growth. Without pond substrate, pond plants will not grow as well and the balance in the pond is more likely to be disturbed.

Yes, we think so. In fact, a layer of pond substrate in the pond offers a warm welcome to the right pond bacteria, which attach themselves to the stone grains or lava rocks. So if you are in doubt about whether to use pond substrate or not; for a natural filter it is indispensable.

The grain size of our substrate is 7-15mm. It is important not to have too large a grain, because smaller grains are better for rooting plants and therefore filter better.

Our substrate is very porous, which allows bacteria and plants to attach well to the granules. Because it is so porous, the substrate may float at first when you place it in the pond. Don't worry about this. The grains saturate with water and will sink to the bottom after about 7 days. If the floating is disturbing, you can temporarily remove the substrate from the pond, put it in a container of water, and put it back later.

Our substrate is always washed in advance before it is shipped. It can sometimes happen that a little haze comes off the grains when you put them in the pond. This is nothing to worry about and the pond will be clear again within 7 days.

We recommend a minimum substrate thickness of about 4-5 cm, and optimally 10 cm. Especially for keeping mussels and other animals a thickness of 10 cm is necessary, because then the animals can dig in and hibernate. The other advantage of a layer of 10cm is that you can properly place the pond baskets here so that they are stable and tucked away in the substrate. 2 bags is sufficient for 5cm thickness per 1m².

It is best to apply substrate to an empty pond with a clean bottom. You can also add it to a full pond by sprinkling it in. If there is a small layer of silt or old substrate in the pond, you can add the new substrate over it. Nevertheless, we recommend always putting it in an empty pond, as this makes it easier to set up and plant.

We recommend the application of substrate in all areas where the soil is flat, so that any waste that ends up on the soil is broken down.

It is not mandatory, but pre-washing can help the pellets sink immediately when added to the pond.

What types of pond substrate are there?

There are different types of substrates, the best known types of substrate are lava rock, zeolite and baked clay substrate.

Baked clay substrate

Baked clay substrate is a type of pond substrate made from clay fired at high temperatures. The result is a porous substrate with a rough structure that provides good water flow and aeration. A key advantage of fired clay as a pond substrate is its porous structure, which provides good aeration and water flow in the pond. This allows the substrate to provide an ideal habitat for beneficial bacteria that contribute to the biological filtration of the pond. The substrate is also relatively heavy and therefore stays well in place. Another advantage of fired clay is that the substrate does not contain any nutrients that can lead to algae growth. As a result, it can contribute to a clear and healthy aquatic plant pond. Also, the substrate offers plant roots a good anchorage, allowing the aquatic plants to grow well.

Substrate of zeolite

Zeolite substrate is a type of pond substrate made from naturally formed minerals. Zeolite has a unique structure that allows it to absorb and retain organic matter and nutrients from the water. As a result, the substrate can help reduce algae and improve water quality in the pond. An important advantage of zeolite as a pond substrate is its high absorption capacity. The substrate can absorb large amounts of nutrients and waste products from the water, keeping the water clear and reducing the opportunity for algae to grow. In addition, zeolite has a long-lasting effect and does not need to be replaced as often as other types of substrate.

Substrate of lava rock

Lava rock substrate is a popular type of pond substrate made from porous stones of volcanic rock. It has a rough texture and lightweight structure, making it easy to move and suitable for various types of aquatic plant ponds. An important advantage of lava rock is its good water flow and aeration. The substrate provides good drainage of waste products and excess nutrients, improving water quality in the pond. In addition, the porous structure of lava rock provides an ideal habitat for beneficial bacteria that help break down organic matter and contribute to the biological filtration of the pond. Another advantage of lava rock is that it is relatively lightweight and therefore easy to handle and move. It can also be used as a decorative element in the pond, as it has a natural look that goes well with different types of garden designs.
