Pond Advice

The Iris, also known as Lis, is a water-purifying marsh plant that not only contributes to a healthier pond environment by filtering waste products from the water, but also blooms beautifully each year. With various color options and the ability to grow to a height of 80 centimeters, it becomes the focal point of any pond.

The ideal depth for planting an Iris is about 20 centimeters. You can choose to plant the Iris at the edge of the pond or as an eye-catcher in the middle on an elevation.

The Iris is a strong aquatic plant that will survive all seasons without a problem. However, it is recommended to cut off all the stems of the Iris in the fall. This will not affect flowering for the following year.

The Iris or Lis is available in different color variations such as blue (Iris Kaempferi), yellow (Iris Pseudacorus), black (Iris Louisiana Black Gamecock), white (Iris Kaempferi White) and pink (Iris Laevigata Rose Queen).

Lissen can be bought at Van der Velde aquatic plants. Every water plant comes directly from our own nursery. We package the Lis in a special way so that they arrive beautiful and healthy to our customers, moreover, with us you get a 100% growth and flowering guarantee.

You can plant this plant either in a basket or directly in the pond. Lissen/Iris have strong roots, which makes them excellent for growing without a basket. It is important, however, to place the plant in a good, porous layer pond substrate so that the roots can develop well and the plant can grow optimally.

Lissen

The iris, also known as lis, belongs to the Iridaceae family. There are hundreds of species of irises that grow in different climates and conditions around the world. Some irises grow in dry, rocky areas, while others grow in swamps and along water sides. The species that grow in wetlands, such as swamps, ponds or at the edge of streams, are often called "swamp irises" or "water irises." A popular example is Iris Pseudacorus, also called the flag iris . This species is native to Europe and is often found along the water's edge.

Iris plant height

Irises can grow to a height of about 80 centimeters. This height makes the Iris a standout in any pond, ideal for both edging plantings and a central eye-catcher.

Irises yellow (Iris pseudacorus)

The flag iris, officially known as "Iris pseudacorus," is not just any aquatic plant. This jewel is not only a feast for the eyes with its brilliant yellow flowers and sword-shaped leaves, but also acts as a natural pond filter. Thanks to the special slime layer on its root system, which is rich in bacteria, the flag iris is extremely effective at absorbing nitrate. Less nitrate? Less algae!

Iris flower

The bog plant requires minimal care. Thanks to the robustness of the plant, it effortlessly endures all seasons. However, it is recommended to remove the stems of the Lis in the fall. Although the Iris then no longer has flowers, the functionality of the aquatic plant remains unchanged. This makes the Lis an excellent choice for those looking for a durable aquatic plant that blooms every year.

Iris plant

The iris is a popular and ornamental plant species known for its beautiful flowers and variety of colors and shapes. Irises are loved for their striking, often sword-shaped leaves and colorful flowers. The flowers vary in colors, including purple, blue, white, yellow, pink and orange, and often have unique patterns and drawings on their petals.

Buy Iris

You buy Irises at vdvelde.com, as we offer Irises in five different colors, in different quantities, in packages and in ready-made pond baskets that you just have to furnish and then put in your pond.

Blue Iris (Iris kaempferi)

The blue iris is an enchanting and common variety within the genus Iris. Blue irises are known for their striking and vibrant blue flower color. This color ranges from bright blue to deep blue, depending on the specific variety. The flowers of the blue iris have the distinctive shape of the iris genus, with sword-shaped petals fanning out from the center. They often have yellow or white markings on their petals.

Iris location

Irises thrive best in well-drained soil and usually need plenty of sunlight to bloom. Some varieties are suited to moist areas, while others prefer drier conditions.

Cutting Irises

Trimming irises, whether by removing old flowers or pruning the plant, can help improve the plant's health and flowering performance. Once the iris flowers have finished blooming, it is a good idea to cut off the spent flower stems. This promotes new growth and prevents the plant from wasting energy forming seeds.
