aquatic plants pond and aquarium
Arrange your pond so that it balances itself 100% naturally. You tackle this by choosing sufficient aquatic plants from all 5 zones: Shoreline plants, marsh plants, aquatic plants (and mini water lilies), oxygen plants (shallow and deep oxygen plants), water lilies (and floating plants). Then your pond will contain everything to keep itself in biological balance.

Pond Advice

aquatic plants Buy from us can be done all year round. In fact, all species are hardy. Planting aquatic plants is possible as long as there is no ice on the water, because then it is quite difficult to place.

To get biological balance in a pond, you need at least 4 different types of aquatic plants : water lilies to keep the sun out of the pond, oxygen plants to release oxygen underwater, marsh plants to create a natural plant filter and aquatic plants that purify the water with their roots.

Read all about which aquatic plants is best to buy and why? Read all about it on the page: Step by step pond setup

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as special aquatic plants against algae. It's about a combination of the right pond plants that makes sure algae growth has less of a chance. water lilies keep the sun out of the water so algae is less likely to grow. Oxygen plants in baskets are often used in less deep areas of the pond to also prevent algae growth. Simon mentions the right combination and amount of plants you need per square meter in his pond planting plan.

Native aquatic plants are available at Van der Velde aquatic plants. You can easily order the aquatic plants and pay securely online. All water plant species are organic grown and are supplied from our own water plant nursery in the Netherlands.

All of our aquatic plants, except the Lotus, are hardy. This means that the plants can remain in the pond year-round. The aquatic plants will lose their flowers and leaves and some aquatic plants will sink to the bottom to go dormant, but they will start growing-and blooming-again in the spring.

To nicely cover the edge of your pond, we have some excellent aquatic plants that are suitable for this purpose. Some of the best edge-covering aquatic plants are creeping jenny, parrot feather and needleweed. These plants not only provide a nice natural finish to your pond edge, but also contribute to the biological balance of the pond.

That's not a problem! However, it is important to keep the aquatic plants in a cool place, such as the refrigerator. That way they will remain dormant until you place them in the pond. Once they are in the pond, they will slowly begin to sprout and grow.

When setting up a new pond, it is important to choose the right amount and types of plants. This is because if the pond does not contain enough aquatic plants , there is no layer of substrate on the bottom and no bacteria are added to the water, the pond becomes unbalanced causing you to get algae.

To prevent algae from taking over in the pond, it is important to set up the pond correctly. The easiest and fastest way to do this is to choose a complete pond package.

If you prefer to choose your own plants, run the pond check and check that your pond is set up correctly. This plan is also great for setting up a new pond.

For aquatic plants we recommend a minimum of 2 baskets with 4 plants per square meter (8 aquatic plants total). In addition, there should also be marsh plants, oxygen plants and water lilies in the pond, a layer of porous pond substrate on the bottom and pond bacteria added to the water 2x a year.

Our online pond check describes step by step how many plants, substrate and bacteria are needed for your size pond. Do the pond check.

Prefer to be finished in one go? Then choose a Complete Pond Package, which includes all the plants and supplies needed to perfectly balance the pond.
