DIY swimming pond construction in 5 steps
- Step 1: Planning and Design
- Step 2: Excavation and Technical Preparations.
- Step 3: pond liner Application
- Step 4: Setting up the Plant Filter
- Step 5: Maintenance and Fish
1. Planning and design
Designing your swimming pond is all about balancing aesthetics and functionality.
Style and Material Selection:
Choose materials that blend seamlessly with the style of your garden to create a harmonious whole. Also consider adequate space for lounging and sitting areas around the pond.
Location and Size:
Choose a sunny spot so the water can warm up optimally and avoid spots under trees to avoid contamination from leaves. Provide a spacious filter area at least twice the size of the swimming area for effective natural filtration and clear water.
Depth and Layout:
Make a sketch with the desired dimensions and depths: the swimming area should be 1.50 to 1.80 meters deep and the filter area between 40 and 50 cm deep. Place a partition between the swimming and filter area, for example an L-profile or a wooden/stone edge just below the water surface. This will prevent the filter material from entering the swimming area.
2. Excavation and Technical Preparations.
Mark the outline of the pond with stakes and ribbon and start digging. Make sure the walls are solid, especially with a deep swimming area, to avoid collapse risks.
Technical Installations for Water Circulation (Optional):
Consider installing a pond pump to circulate water, which can further improve water quality. For a natural look, conceal technical equipment such as a pump or filter unit in a pit or separate technology room.
Separation between Filter and Swim Area:
Place a partition just below the water surface to keep plants and substrate in the filter section. This ensures a clear swimming area without plant debris or substrate particles.
3. pond liner Applying
Use high-quality EPDM liner for lining your pond. This material is durable, stretchy and gives the pond a natural look, while its black color allows the water to warm up better. EPDM liner also offers extra security, often with a warranty of up to 30 years.
Protective cloth:
Place a protective cloth under the liner to prevent damage from sharp objects such as roots or stones. Finish the edges neatly with hardwood cover battens or stones for a clean and natural look.
4. Setting up the Plant Filter
Substrate and Planting:
Cover the filter area with 30 cm pond substrate and place carefully selected aquatic plants that help filter the water. The substrate is porous, allowing beneficial bacteria to develop easily and contribute to water purification. Fill the filter section gradually with water so that the substrate fills up well and the plants can take firm root.
Plant Species and Circulation:
Choose marsh plants and substrate plants that provide biological filtration. Creating good circulation between the filtration and swimming areas (such as with an underwater connection) keeps the water optimally clear without affecting the swimming experience.
5. Maintenance and Fish
A well-designed swimming pond with an extensive plant filter requires minimal maintenance. Use these tips to ensure a clear and healthy water environment:
Fall maintenance:
Remove excess plants and prune them to about 20 inches above the water surface. Add additional Bacta Clear pond bacteria in September to break down dead leaves and reduce bottom silt.
Spring maintenance:
Replace some filter plants as needed and add bacteria again to keep the filter in top condition. This promotes a stable biological balance and provides clearer water.
Fish or No Fish:
Although a swimming pond without chemicals is suitable for fish, they bring additional pollution and some visitors may be less comfortable swimming with fish. Should you still want fish, consider a separate swimming and fishing area with, for example, a subtle waterfall as a divider.

Frequently asked questions about swimming ponds
Yes, it is absolutely possible to make your own swimming pond, although it is a sizeable project. Getting started yourself can save you costs, but it does require time, patience and the right tools and materials. However, the satisfaction of completing such a project is unmatched.
Construction of a swimming pond can range from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the complexity of the design, the size of the pond and weather conditions.
A swimming pond generally requires less energy than a traditional pool because it does not involve heating or chemical treatment processes. Energy costs for a swimming pond depend mainly on any pumps or filters used.
Annual maintenance costs for a swimming pond vary, but on average you can expect between €100 and €500. These costs include plant care, pond bacteria, pond maintenance materials and any repairs.
For a natural swimming pond, oxygen plants such as hornwort, elodea densa and pond weed are ideal. Marsh plants such as reeds, great reedmace and sweet flag also help purify the water and provide a natural look.

Constructing a swimming pond
Different types of natural swimming ponds
Advantages and disadvantages of a swimming pond
- Costs: A swimming pond is often more economical to construct. The investment is mainly pond liner, pond plants and pond substrate. On the other hand, a pool can be more expensive because of the required foundation and equipment.
- Aesthetics: A swimming pond offers a natural look that attracts both people and pond animals. In contrast, the typical light blue of a swimming pool can appear less natural.
- Maintenance: Thanks to a natural plant filter, a swimming pond requires minimal maintenance. In contrast, a swimming pool often requires chemicals and special equipment to keep the water clear.
- Shape and design: A swimming pond can be constructed in any natural shape, whereas a swimming pool often has a standard rectangular shape.
- Ecology: A swimming pond is completely biological thanks to the presence of aquatic plants and pond bacteria, eliminating the need for harmful chemicals.
- Year-round enjoyment: Even outside the swimming season, a swimming pond is a joy to behold and a nice place to be because of the vibrancy of plants and animals. A pool, on the other hand, often covered, can look deserted out of season.

The difference between a swimming pool and a natural pool
Which pool is best for your garden depends on how much land you have and how big your budget is. In the case of people with small gardens, an inflatable pool is the best pool to buy.
If you like more of a natural effect in your garden, it is best to build a swimming pond in the garden. This natural pool contains natural water which means that no chlorine is used, which is the case with a swimming pool.
Also, a swimming pond requires much less maintenance than a pool because it is a natural water source and a swimming pond is a lot cheaper to build and maintain.
Natural pools and traditional pools pros and cons
- Your pool needs regular cleaning which takes a lot of time.
- A water pump and a chlorination system must be purchased to keep the pool water clear and clean, unfortunately these resources are expensive to purchase and consume a lot of electricity.
- Chlorine must be added to pool water to keep pool water healthy. Chlorine is not good for the skin because it contains chemicals.
- Animals that end up in the pool have difficulty getting out of it because of the straight walls a pool has.
Advantages of a natural swimming pond:
- For nature lovers, a swimming pond is ideal because it can be seamlessly integrated into your garden due to the natural look a swimming pond has.
- A swimming pond costs on average about 40,000 euros less in construction, this make swimming ponds a great alternative for people looking for a cost-saving alternative.
- A swimming pond requires little to no maintenance and no chlorine derivatives need to be added to the water to keep it healthy. In fact, filtering water is done by planting different types of aquatic plants in the pond, which makes the swimming pond virtually maintenance-free. You can also choose to build a plant filter in your pond. A plant filter you can easily build yourself.
Building a natural swimming pool in 4 steps
- The depth and shape of a swimming pond play a major role in determining how the pond should be dug. A plan of the yard should be made showing the desired pond design. The location of the plant filter or natural marsh should be considered when making the design. Once this is done, use markers to indicate where the excavation for the pond should take place in relation to other elements in the garden.
- The necessary excavation work must be done to build a swimming pond. The deeper the swimming pond, the more soil must be stabilized to prevent groundwater from becoming a problem. The walls of your swimming pond must be well solid to prevent collapse, with deeper pools requiring heavier and sturdier walls. A very important part of the swimming pond is the plant filter. An optimal depth for this component is -40 cm from the water level in the pond. The shoring between the swimming area and the filter part of the pond should be placed about -10 cm under water to keep pond substrate and aquatic plants out of the swimming area.
- Once the bottom, walls and filter area are solid and ready, you can start applying a good rubber liner. We recommend using rubber liner or EPDM pond liner because it will last for at least thirty years, making it much more durable than PVC liner. When installing the liner, make sure that you cover it properly at the edges, for example with hardwood cover battens or stones.
- Once the pond liner is in place, the plant filter can be set up in your swimming pond. First start with a layer of pond substrate of 20 cm, but do not fill the pond with water yet. Plant the chosen pond plants (read more about aquatic plants below ) in the layer of substrate, this will give the pond plants a solid base. Then pour in about 10 cm pond substrate , so at the same height (or just below it) as the wooden or stone barrier that is under water. This is how you create a natural filter. Next, fill the entire pond with water and add pond bacteria for a good start. Keep in mind that it will take a few years for the filter to work optimally because roots need time to grow over the entire surface.

The best location for a natural swimming pool
For a swimming pond, it is important to choose a location in the garden where there is sufficient sunlight for about six hours a day, in order to promote the growth of aquatic plants . I recommend that you do not place the swimming pond next to a tree, as the leaves that fall from the tree can contaminate the water and thus require extra maintenance.
