- 5 pond construction tips from Simon -

1. Pond construction plan

Don't start digging first and only then think about a landscaping plan but turn it around. What do you want your pond to do? What is its purpose? A swimming pond, a koi pond? How big can and should the pond be? What is the planting plan? This directly affects the depth. So deepen your plan first and only then the pond itself. Of course, the size and purpose of the pond play a big role in working out the plans.

2. Pond plant choice

The design possibilities in terms of planting are very large. The important thing is that there is and remains a balance, so that all plants have room to grow and bloom at the right time without crowding each other out. There are plenty of examples where one species eventually prevails and remains.

3. Pond planting plan

Provide a planting plan where the plants themselves ensure that the pond remains clean and healthy. Do the siting of the plants smartly enough to minimize the chance of algae growth. A thesis by Simon van der Velde is that you don't actually need filters and other technical aids to keep a pond clean and clear. The plants can do that very well on their own. Maintenance is mainly done in the spring and fall. In the summer you sit with a drink in your hand enjoying a nice growing and pleasantly flowering collection of pond plants.

4. Pure nature

Don't be tempted to buy all kinds of measuring equipment and water improvers. None of this is necessary: if your fish are swimming nicely and the plants are growing nicely, then the pond is balanced and the water is of good quality. Those are the indicators!

5. Setting up the pond

Pond plants and substrate first, then water. Often when my help is sought in recommending pond planting or problems, the pond is already filled with water. A fully filled pond does not allow for improvements. Also, placing plants in deep areas is easier when the pond is not yet fully filled.

Constructed and decorated sustainable and biodiverse pond without pumps and filters - Expert tips

The construction of a natural pond and stream is discussed, with a balanced ecosystem is created and various species of pond animals are attracted. Experiences and tips are shared on how to constructing, decorating and maintenance of a natural pond.

Summary of YouTube video: ''Large Garden Pond and Stream in Dorset UK - Dorset Pond Builder'' by The Pond Advisor

The video shows Richard and Tom discussing the design and construction of the garden pond and stream. The project began after lockdown in June and took several days to complete. The pond is in the middle of the garden and has panoramic views from all angles. The pond has a negative edge and the water flows through a stream and swamp plant filter. Richard and his wife had no previous experience with ponds, but they wanted a natural pond and stream that reminded them of Dartmoor, with the sound of running water. They also wanted to encourage wildlife, and Tom suggested creating a natural ecosystem with balanced flora and fauna. Richard noted that dragonflies were spotted around the pond within a day or two of construction. The pond and stream have many features that appeal to children, such as stepping stones, a beach and fairy doors. Richard's grandchildren love the pond and enjoy playing in it. The owners also enjoy their time in the sunroom, which overlooks the pond and stream. Tom and Richard discuss pond maintenance, which is minimal because of the natural ecosystem. They avoid using artificial filtration systems and ultraviolet lights, opting instead for a more natural approach: various species of aquatic plants. The pond is refilled only a few times a year, and the plant cover and shade help reduce evaporation. Overall, the owners are pleased with their investment and enjoy their time in the garden with their families. They believe the pond and stream have created memories and joy that will last for years to come.

Natural pond filtration through the use of aquatic plants

The video mentions that Tom and Richard took a natural approach to creating the pond and landscaping. This means they did not use artificial filter systems or UV lights, but instead created a natural ecosystem with pond plants. The pond has a wetland filter, which is a natural filtration system that uses the properties of plants to clean the water. The water flows through a stream and wetland, with the aquatic plants remove nutrients from the water and improve water quality. To make the pond look natural, they planted many plants in and around the pond. This helps to improve water quality and creates habitat for different types of animals. They also made sure there is plenty of shade to keep the temperature of the water cool and reduce evaporation. This is important to ensure that the pond does not evaporate too quickly and that there is enough water to maintain ecosystems.

Frequently asked questions about pond construction

Ponds are often excavated incorrectly. Therefore it is important to make a good design of the desired pond. Many times we have come across people who just started digging a hole and wanted to put foil in it. This all worked. But then they came to the layout of the pond. This is not easy when no zones have been created. Because a pond without zones, consisting of a square hole of, say, 1.5 m deep, can contain little to no plants. It may sound crazy, but water lilies can also drown if they are too deep. The leaves then no longer reach the surface. Hence our advice if you want to build and decorate your own pond in the garden.

If you want to build your own pond with foil, keep in mind an average cost of €200 perm2. Making a good plan can avoid unnecessary costs. Simons Pond Advice Book gives you all the tips & tricks to save money and build a successful, clear pond in one go.

Building ponds can be done year-round, except when it freezes. Weather conditions have changed so much compared to 25 years ago that the seasons have become less and less different. For example, we have our nursery stocked year-round with aquatic plants. Plants do not grow as fast in the fall, but they overwinter and sprout immediately in the spring. They are hardy. Thus, you can dig a pond and plant pond plants all year round. The only exception to this rule is when it freezes, because then there is ice on the water. Then building a pond will be more difficult.

One of the best times to plant your pond is in the fall. In that case, the plants experience the winter period and will be stronger for the start of the growing season in spring. In many (online) stores, foil and pond substrate are on sale during the winter period, but pond plants are not. At Van der Velde Waterplants, however, pond plants are available year-round in winter.

This depends greatly on what kind of pond you want to build. Especially for this, Simon has listed the most commonly chosen ponds plus his advice. See all pond types and tips
