Large ponds
What you understand by a large pond is different for everyone, I often maintain that a pond with a capacity of 5000 liters or more is considered ''large''. A pond of this size offers enough space for different types of aquatic plants and fish and can be an important feature of a garden or landscape. It is important to consider that a pond of 5,000 gallons or more may also require more maintenance than a smaller pond. It is important to ensure that the pond remains balanced and that water quality remains good to maintain the health of the pond plants and pond animals ensure. If the pond is set up correctly, the water feature will maintain itself naturally and it is unnecessary to install pumping and filtration systems.
Constructing a large pond
The constructing a pond of 5,000 gallons or more requires some planning and preparation, but it is certainly feasible if you follow the right steps. Here are some steps you can follow to build a pond of this size:
Location
Choose a location that is partially shaded and away from trees and shrubs that can drop leaves and debris into the pond. Also check that the ground is stable and suitable to support the pond.
Excavation
Dig out the hole for the pond and make sure the dimensions are adequate for the size of the pond. Consider the depth of the pond, depending on the types of aquatic plants and aquatic animals you want to have. Generally, a depth of at least 1 meter is recommended.

Pond liner OR natural
Place the pond liner into the hole, making sure it is evenly distributed and not pulled tight. Cut off the excess liner and cover the edges with rocks or other decorative material. You can also choose to keep the pond completely natural and not use pond liner, this is called a natural pond. A natural pond also has no pond substrate and pond bacteria needed and comes into biological balance through nature and mainly just the plants. But most ponds do use substrate and bacteria because it also offers numerous benefits.

Planting
Decide where you want to place the pond plants and then distribute the baskets of aquatic plants evenly on the bottom of the pond. It is important to consider the zone in which each pond plant is best planted so that the plants can grow optimally and perform their function in the pond. For this, use as a handy tool my pond planting plan.

Filling the pond
To check leaks and test the water quality, it is recommended to fill the pond with water for several days and let it rest. If the water level is unchanged after a few days, fill the pond to the brim.
Pond Fish
Once the pond is set up and there are enough species of aquatic plants growing in the pond, it is time, if you are interested in this, to have pond fish start adding them. Be sure to choose only suitable species that fit the size of the pond.
Maintenance
If you set up the pond naturally, that is, without pumps and filters, the pond requires little maintenance. The only thing you can do is to occasionally cleaning the pond by fishing leaves out of the water with a scoop net and removing silt residue. Your pond and aquatic plants you may want to maintain seasonally so they can bloom even more beautifully and fully the following year.
Setting up a large pond
Setting up a large pond requires many aquatic plants. It is therefore ideal to buy plants in large numbers in the form of a pond plants package. A plant that should not be missing in any pond is the water lily. Water lilies are not only beautiful to look at, they also have several useful functions. The leaves of the water lily filter sunlight, which reduces water heating and algae growth. In addition, the leaves of the water lily provide a natural hiding place for fish and other aquatic inhabitants. For a large pond, 1 water lily is obviously not much, for this type of pond a waterlily field consisting of 30 water lilies is therefore the ideal choice. Our water lilies are hardy, which makes them a good investment for a clear and healthy pond for years to come.

Benefits of a large natural pond
A large pond is more work to build and decorate and of course you just have to have room for it in the garden, but large ponds offer many advantages. Besides the fact that a large pond can be a real eye-catcher in your garden or landscape, it also gives a wonderful feeling of peace and relaxation as you can enjoy the appearance of the pond and watch the pond fish and other pond animals in and around the pond. Therefore, it is a wonderful way to brighten up your outdoor space and create a calming atmosphere.
But perhaps more importantly, a large natural pond can help promote biodiversity in an environment. Because water provides habitat for different types of plants and animals, it can provide more variety in nature. In addition, ponds can serve as an important source of food and habitat for various animals, such as insects, amphibians and birds. As a result, the presence of a pond can make a positive contribution to maintaining biodiversity in the environment.

Frequently asked questions about large ponds
The amount of water needed per square meter of floor space depends on the depth of the pond. Generally, for a pond with a depth of about 50-60 centimeters, a volume of 1,000-1500 liters per square meter is recommended. This means that for a 10-square-meter pond, the amount of water needed would be about 10,000-15,000 liters.
The cost of a large pond depends on the cost of building and decorating the pond. If you decorate the pond with aquatic plants to naturally filter the water and do not use pumps and filters you will be a lot cheaper and contribute to the environment!
