KH value | The value that should be tested or is this not necessary?
Water parameters and KH, the terms that every pond owner has heard passed by at some point, but what does a K H value really stand for and what is a good KH?
The KH value is a unit of measurement used to indicate the number of dissolved percentages of magnesium and calcium contained in pond water. Carbonate hardness forms through the bond between calcium, magnesium and carbonic acid. It is important that the KH value remains stable, especially when there is life in the pond such as fish or other aquatic animals because the PH value, i.e. acidity can drop significantly which can be threatening to the fish in the pond. The water values and the importance of hard water can depend on the type of pond you have.
An ideal water hardness, so water values between 8-12 DH provide a clean and safe environment for all life in the pond. To keep the hardness of the water in your pond and thus also the KH, PH and GH values good, it is important among other things that the pond is well constructed.
Once this is in order, you can start decorating your pond. Setting up a pond is an important way to keep your pond in balance and create a safe habitat for the aquatic life in your pond. When the pond is set up properly, measuring water parameters is not necessary.
First, start by adding substrate to the bottom of the pond, pond substrate after all, is the foundation of your pond. Then place enough oxygen plants to balance the water values and water hardness. Finally, add bacteria to the water to keep the GH, KH and PH values within normal ranges.
Supplies for a maintenance-free pond
An ideal KH value is between 6-10 DH according to the guidelines. This value is easy to measure but will vary per measurement because the value is highly dependent on weather conditions. This is because KH adjusts quickly when carbon dioxide in the water increases, the PH will then decrease again.
A KH value shows the amount of carbonates and bicarbonates in the water. These carbonates are needed to keep the water values, including the PH value, high.

Pond specialist and aquatic plant grower since 1986
Simon's vision is to let nature do its work in your pond. No need to buy all kinds of measuring equipment and water improvers. If the fish are swimming nicely and the plants are growing well, then the water in the pond is of good quality. With a good planting plan and the right approach, you can save a lot of money and maintenance, and ensure a clear, biologically balanced pond that becomes more beautiful every year.
