What are good water values for a pond?
For a healthy pond with sufficient oxygen plants and a natural balance, water values do not need to be constantly measured. In a well-established pond, plants and bacteria regulate the balance on their own. Ideally, the pH is between 6.5 and 8, the KH between 6 and 8, and the GH around 8 to 12. With sufficient oxygen plants and products such as BACTA CLEAR and INSTA CLEAN, you can ensure clear water without constant monitoring. See our step-by-step pond check for more information on natural balance.
Which is more important, GH or KH?
Both values play a role, but in a naturally designed pond with sufficient oxygen plants, you don't need to measure them constantly. The KH (carbonate hardness) affects pH stability, while the GH (total hardness) adds minerals essential for plant and fish health. Using enough oxygen plants and proper setup with natural products such as INSTA CLEAN and BACTA CLEAR will keep your pond naturally stable.
How can I increase the GH level in my pond?
In a well-designed pond with the right oxygen plants, it is usually not necessary to adjust GH levels regularly. Should this still be necessary, you can increase GH by adding minerals such as calcium sulfate or magnesium sulfate. However, by choosing a natural setup with oxygen plants, these values often stabilize on their own.
What should I do if the KH is too high?
A high KH value rarely occurs in a naturally balanced pond. However, when the KH is too high, it can be easily resolved by changing some water. In a pond with sufficient oxygen plants and good natural setup, it is usually not necessary to continuously correct the KH, as the plants and bacteria support stable water quality.
Is a pH of 8 good for my pond?
Yes, a pH of 8 is generally good for ponds with proper setup and oxygen plants. A pH between 6.5 and 8 is ideal, and a value around 8 is fine if the rest of the water quality is balanced. Oxygen plants help keep the pH stable, so adjustment is usually not necessary.
