1. pond substrate

A layer pond substrate in the pond provides a welcome home for beneficial bacteria, which attach to the stone pellets or lava rock and naturally purify the water. This keeps the water clear without the need for a filter or pump, saving costs. Add the bacteria immediately after construction. In addition, pond substrate helps plant roots attach well without rotting. So for a natural filter, pond substrate is indispensable.

Simons advice for pond substrate

Make sure you have a layer of 8-10 cm of substrate on the pond floor.

  • For an optimal filtering effect and a suitable place for pond animals such as mussels and snails to burrow in for winter dormancy and for pond plants to root properly, 10 cm is required. For this you need minimum 2x POND SUBSTRATE - 40 liters .

Step 2. Oxygen Plants

Oxygen plants are essential for any pond! With enough oxygen plants, you don't need a pump or filter. They filter the water, block sunlight to reduce algae formation, and provide hiding places for fish. All of our hardy oxygen plants come from our own nursery with a 100% growth and flowering guarantee. For optimal balance, we recommend 10-12 individual plants per 1,000 gallons of water and 2 baskets of 4 plants per m².

Step 4. Sumpfpflanzen

Our range includes the strongest hardy marsh plants, with 100% growth and flowering guarantee. Tip: In shallow areas like the marsh, the water warms up fastest, which promotes algae growth. By placing extra many plants here and using a mix of tall aquatic plants and low-growing oxygen plants, you will prevent algae. We recommend at least 2 baskets with 4 plants per m² (8 plants total).

Step 6. Pond bacteria

It is recommended to add Pond bacteria twice a year; once in the spring to start up the pond, or after pond construction and once in the fall to help the pond get through the winter. This helps the biological filter work properly and gives the oxygen plants an extra boost in the spring. It is recommended to add extra pond substrate at the same time in the spring, this will help pond plants grow better.
