Frequently asked questions about dwarf water lilies

Pond Advice

The flowering period of a mini water lily can vary depending on several factors, including the species, care and conditions in your pond. In general, mini water lilies can bloom throughout the summer months and sometimes even into early fall. This means you can enjoy their beautiful flowers for a significant portion of the warm season.

To care for a small water lily, place it in direct sunlight for 4-6 hours a day, at a depth of 30-60 cm below the water surface. Use pond plant fertilizer according to instructions, pay attention to water quality, and prune dead leaves regularly. In cold climates, prepare them for winter by storing them underwater in a frost-free spot

Mini water lilies (Nymphaea tetragona) are native to North America and are native to the marshes and ponds of this area. They thrive in temperate climates and are loved for their small size and attractive flowers. These water lilies have spread to ponds and water features around the world because of their beauty and ease of care.

Pruning mini water lilies is easy. Use sharp pruning shears or a knife to cut off dead or yellowed leaves just above the base. This promotes the growth of new leaves and keeps your water lily healthy. Be sure to do this regularly, especially during the growing season, to keep your water lilies in top condition.

Dwarf water lilies can usually be planted at a depth of about 15-40 centimeters below the surface of the water. This ensures that they receive adequate water and sufficient sunlight to thrive. Be sure to follow the recommended planting depth for the specific type of dwarf water lily, as this can vary depending on the variety.

Mini water lily

A graceful and compact version of the traditional water lily, the mini water lily is perfect for smaller ponds or water features. With its floating leaves and beautiful flowers, it creates a soothing atmosphere in any garden. This species is easy to maintain and usually blooms in summer, making it a favorite for lovers of aquatic plants.

Can mini water lilies be used indoors grown?

Mini water lilies are primarily intended for outdoor use in ponds, water containers or small water features. They generally need plenty of sunlight and outdoor conditions to thrive. It is difficult to fully mimic these conditions indoors. Therefore, they are not usually considered suitable houseplants.

How often should dwarf water lilies be fertilized?

dwarf water lilies must be fertilized regularly to stay healthy and bloom abundantly. During the growing season, usually from spring to fall, fertilizing once every 4-6 weeks is a good guideline. Use a special water lily fertilizer to ensure they get all the essential nutrients.

What types of fish are compatible with small water lilies?

Mini water lilies are generally compatible with a variety of pond fish, such as goldfish, koi, and windes. These fish even benefit from the shade and hiding places provided by the lily pads. However, it is important to avoid fish nibbling too much on the roots, as this can damage the plant.

How do I prevent my mini water lilies from becoming overgrown with algae?

Overgrowth by algae can be a challenge for water lilies. To prevent this, make sure your mini water lilies has enough leaves to cover the surface of the water. This reduces sunlight, which can inhibit algae growth. You can also consider natural water treatments, such as adding aquatic plants that compete with algae, to keep algae under control.

Should I bring my mini water lilies inside in the winter?

Most mini water lilies are hardy, meaning they can withstand cold temperatures and frost. In most cases, there is no need to bring them inside during the winter. They can continue to grow even if the pond partially freezes. However, it may be helpful to use an ice freezer to maintain an opening in the ice to allow oxygen to circulate and to prevent damage to the roots.

Oxygen plants are a must for any pond!
Sufficiently oxygenating underwater plants in the pond means you will NOT need a pump and filter. Oxygenating plants filter the water and block the sun. This causes the water to heat up less which reduces the formation of algae. Oxygen plants also provide shelter for fish from impending danger. All of our oxygen plants are hardy and are supplied from our own aquatic plant nursery with a 100% growth and flowering guarantee. For oxygen plants, I recommend a minimum of 10 to 12 individual plants per m³ (1000 liters of water) and 2 baskets of 4 plants per m². The amount needed depends on how quickly you want the pond to balance and your visual requirements.

Simon van der Velde
Loose oxygen plants
Ideal for the deeper part of the pond.
Recommendation: 10-12 plants per 1,000 liters of water
Baskets of oxygen plants
Suitable for shallow areas, provide natural elevation differences and help prevent algae.
Recommendation: 2 baskets per 1 m²
