Lotus flower growing

Want to add your own lotus to your pond? There are two options: buy a lotus rhizome if you want to enjoy the blooms right away, these are rare but oh so beautiful, or start with seed for a cheaper option and the pleasure of watching your own flowers grow. Regardless of your choice, the lotus is an asset that not only pleases your eye, but also attracts friends of nature such as bees, butterflies and dragonflies.

Lotus plant care

For healthy growth of your lotus, choose special pond plant clay that supports and nourishes the plant with essential minerals. This clay provides stability for the plant in the water and promotes strong root growth. Provide a sunny spot in your pond and keep the water temperature above 20 degrees Celsius during the growing season. In winter, it is important to protect your lotus plants from frost so they can return to their full glory each spring.

Nelumbo Lotus overwintering

Outside the pond: Overwintering a lotus in the Netherlands is easier than you think: keep it frost-free and moist. For beginners: store your lotus in a bright, frost-free room such as a garden room or conservatory. Remember that too long in the dark doesn't do the lotus any good - it needs light for a strong comeback in spring.

In the pond: You might think you can just leave your lotus in the pond during the winter, but beware: only if your pond does not freeze completely. Cut away old leaves and let your lotus sink to the bottom. But don't forget to take it out early in spring and put it in a warm place with lots of light so it can gather strength for the growing season.
