Lisdodde | All about the Typha and why it is the ideal pond plant!
The Lisdodde, one of the best water purifying marsh plants and is an ideal addition to the pond. But why is the Lisdodde, or Typha such a great addition to the pond? I Simon, pond and aquatic plant specialist will tell you all about it in this blog!
What kind of aquatic plant is a Pondweed?
Lis duckweed plants are hardy pond plants which are often planted on the pond bank. The Lisdodde can be divided into two main species, namely the large Lisdodde; Typha Latifolia and the dwarf Lisdodde; Typha Minima. These aquatic plants are both hardy making them a beautiful addition to your pond year in, year out. The only difference between the two is that the dwarf cinquefoil grows slightly smaller than the other. This is because the Typha Minima grows to a maximum height of 60 centimeters and the Typha Latifolia can grow up to 80 centimeters tall. Both can be planted up to a depth of 20 centimeters in the pond. The Lisdodde is a water purifying plant, as it filters nitrate and nitrite from the water which ensures stable water values: KH value, PH value and GH value.

Why is a Lisdodde of value in the pond?
Because the Lisdodde filters nutrients from the water and from the bottom of the pond, the water quality of your pond will improve significantly. Nutrients are fertilizers, when there is an excess of fertilizers in the pond, the natural balance of your pond will be disturbed. This is because an abundance of fertilizers in the pond causes an increase in algae formation. Algae causes the oxygen plants in the pond have too little room to grow and they can get stuck in the algae. When this happens, the oxygen plants cannot do their job adequately, so they can release less oxygen to the pond water. This is not ideal for the environment in your pond. Because the Lisdodde filters these nutrients from the water and releases oxygen to the pond water, this is the ideal aquatic plant for the pond!
Can the Lisdodde be placed in any pond?
The advantage of the Lisdodde is that the plant is hardy and therefore can survive every season. This means that the Lisdodde lasts year in, year out and blooms a little more beautifully each year. Because the Typha Latifolia and Typha Minima is an invasive aquatic plant, it is advisable to place the marsh plant in a pond basket in the pond. This is because a pond basket ensures that the water plant stays in place and thus does not get the chance to proliferate throughout your pond. This way you only reap the joys of the Lisdodde!
Where in the pond do I place the Lisdodde?
A Lisdodde, or a Typha, is always placed on the bank of the pond. This is because in addition to being a water purifying plant, the Typha is also a marsh plant so it can be placed at a maximum depth of 20 centimeters. In the middle of the pond it would therefore be too deep. Furthermore, despite being hardy, this water purifying marsh plant also loves to be in a sunny to slightly shaded spot. This makes a Typha the ideal aquatic plant and asset for your pond!
