The Sarracenia or Trumpet Cup Plant is a beautiful hardy plant that can tolerate temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius. The Sarracenia has what is known as a cup trap. The leaves, which often have beautiful red/green markings, are rolled up, creating a cup. Insects are lured by the colors of the plant and the smell of the nectar in the cups. Once an insect has crawled into the cup, it is trapped because there are downward-pointing hairs in the cup that hold the insect captive. Inside the cup are digestive juices that eventually digest the insect.

Trumpet cup plants are hardy. This carnivorous plant Sarracenia can survive temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius. However, it is important to take care in winter, that this trumpet pitcher plant is not left in a complete lump of ice for too long. The plant will then no longer be able to absorb water and will dry out. So cold is not a problem, but the plant cannot go weeks without water.

As a result, carnivorous plants are better off not standing among other pond plants because they have different soil requirements. So always put trumpet cup plants separately.

When carnivorous plants are outside, they will catch enough insects on their own. A carnivorous plant indoors may very occasionally be fed an insect. Plant food is also out of the question. This does the plant more harm than good.
